Milwaukee Superpogs has been in cooperation with Pewaukee Veterinary Service in Wisconsin has been Developing Protocals for Pre-Natal Care for Hedgehogs.
Because Breeding Hedgehogs can be so tricky, we have decided to devote an entire page to Pre-Natal Care of Hedgehogs.
WARNING: WE ARE NOT VETS, SIMPLY SHARING WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED FROM OUR EXPERIENCES, FOR MORE INFORMATION PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL AND WE WILL BE HAPPY TO SHARE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION!!!
WARNING: YOU SHOULD NOT BE BREEDING HEDGEHOGS IF YOU DO NOT HAVE AN USDA LICENSE AND DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GETTING INTO!!!!
WE CAN'T STRESS THIS ENOUGH
We have found that with pre-natal care you save animals lives and money!!!
As part of our protocal, all our hedgehogs see a veterinarian who specializes in exotics. But it is important that the vet also have experience with hedgehogs as well or consult other vets. It Is IMPORTANT that each of our hedgehogs sees the vet before we decide to breed. This is our choice, but the risk is up to you if you do not consult a veterinarian.
All our hedgehogs see the vet for a pre-breeding exam to be sure there is no weight, health, or developmental concerns.
THE AGE AND SIZE OF YOUR HEDGEHOGS THAT ARE BEING BREED IS VERY IMPORTANT ESPECIALLY FOR FIRST TIME BREEDING.
All our females go in for a pregnancy check approximately 3-3 1/2 weeks into the pregancy or about 10 days prior to their expected due date.
At this time we do ultra-sounds to determine if their may be any complications. Once a vet has experience with these ultra-sounds they can tell you if you hedgehog is pregnant or not. And when the vet gets really good at performing the ultra-sounds you may even be able to count the babies or heartbeats.
Below I will attach different ultra-sounds so that you may get a good idea of what a good ultra-sound looks like.
