Ivory

Born August 1999
Albino

Ivory of ANCR (Beecher, Il) is a beautiful albino hedgehog. Albino animals lack any pigment--meaning, they have no coloration on their entire body. Eyes are pink and quills are white. Albinoism is a double recessive gene. Meaning both parents must be a carrier for the albino trait.

Just because a hedgehog is a abino doesn't mean that her babies would be albino as well. True, that she would produce all albino carriers, however, the color of Ivories babies would also involve the genes of the father.

Ivory has been under 300 grams most of the first year of her life and has also been very hyper. Because of her small size and her hyperness we have decided to not breed Ivory.

Bones begin to harden in hedgehogs before they are a year of age. If we were to breed Ivory, there would be a risk of babies getting stuck in the birth canal and may require a c-section--endangering the mothers life and for sure the babies.
If you look closely at this picture you can see how dense the quills can be on a hedgehog. You can also see the lack of pigment in an albino's quills. If you were to look at these quills in the light, you could almost see right through the quills.
